Originally built in 1710, the Country House Restaurant has undergone a great many changes in ownership and purpose. At first it was a family home with an adjoining farm, and during the Revolutionary War it was used to house British troops.

Legend has it that during the war, Annette Williamson was left in the house to look after it by her parents while they went to check on another farm they owned in New Jersey. During their absence, British troops came to occupy the home; not knowing what else to do, Annette let them in without a struggle. The troops eventually left, but Annette was branded a spy by the local townsfolk; those same townsfolk cornered her in the home and hung her from the second story rafters. Her body is allegedly buried in a small grave on the property.

Annette is said to now haunt the kitchen and stairway of the Country House, crying out and draining light bulbs to catch the attention of guests. Onetime owner, Thomas Haddaway, was also said to hold séances in the building, drawing in an unknown number of other spirits.

Most beautiful Restaurant on Long Island

Four of us went after the Culper Spy tour.
When you walk into the Country House, it a fantasy of flowers and utmost pretty decor you can ever imagine.
every step , everywhere you turn your surrounded by beautifulness. Even the ladies room was spotless and pretty. The food was amazingly delicious with onion rings and fries cooked to perfection. We all had sandwiches. Then topped off with a fluffy, creamy choclate, mousse covered in mounds of sweet fresh whipped cream. service was prompt , curtious and friendly. As was the owner, Bob. Cant wait to go back again & again. Five strar experience.

Worked there 1966-1970

Lived upstairs for about 6 months. Toilet up stairs there would flush by itself sometimes. We(staff) would stay after work and have a few drinks and wait for the ghost to make noises down the fireplace chimney and occasionally swing the door open between the kitchen and dining room. No breeze, no way for the door to
Swing open Unassisted. Sometimes there were creaks and groans from the old building though we figured it was settling.supposedly the old cellar was used as part of the Underground Railway for runaway or escaped slaves heading further north.
