While still operational, Smithtown General was a small hospital of dubious quality. It eventually fell under the weight of numerous lawsuits, and closed down in the 1990s. Before its demise, people claimed to see a ghostly lady wearing a white gown on the building’s second floor near the surgery rooms. The hospital was demolished in 2007, but could the lady in white remain?

My sister died in Smithtown General Hospital

My sister, Mary, died in January 1992 of sepsis at Smithtown General Hospital. To me, it seemed like her doctor did everything he could. I am not a medical person though.

Emergency Room

I was taken to this hospital for a workplace injury with a broken drillbit snapped off in my right hand in 1985. They did nothing to help me at all, other than give me an iodine soaked bandage... no X rays, sat there for 4 hours. My section of the room looked like it was already abandoned, with peeling paint and a huge crack in the wall. The equipment all looked like it was from decades ago. I heard someone moaning in pain. Finally a nurse came in and when I asked her about it, she said there was only one other patient who left 2 hours back and she heard nothing. She then told me no orthopedic doctor would come here, so after a totally unnecessary ambulance ride, I had to call a taxi to take me to the doctor's office 20 miles away. I once went back in at night after it was abandoned to take a look around and really thought I heard that same sound again... and got out pretty soon afterward! There is nothing left, condos were built there recently.

Hospital History Update

This is not quite right. St. Johns Hospital, also in Smithtown, had gotten word that North Shore Hospital was interested in buying Smithtown General, which by then, was called Community Hospital of Western Suffolk (CHOWS). In an effort to ward off competition, it rushed in and purchased the hospital. It was an ill-advised move that saddled St. Johns with a ton of debt. They offered nurses a buyout, never expecting the number of nurses who would take that offer. That deepened the debt considerably. St. Johns which was an Episcopal Hospital is now St. Catherines, a Catholic Hospital. So you can see how this story ended
