Pilgrim Psychiatric Center
Brentwood, NY 11717
Many Long Islanders have heard of the Pilgrim Psychiatric Center, and even more have tried to explore it. The building dates back to October 1st, 1931, and at this time, it was the largest psychiatric hospital in the world. Its size has never been exceeded by any other facility, though it's now far smaller than it once was.
In the 1950's is when the hospital began to do lobotomies and electro-convulsive therapy (ECT), which may be the reason why the place is believed to be haunted. The spirits of those who once died here years ago are said to still linger.
In Building 45, the psych center hosts the Long Island Psychiatric Museum, which displays items such as newsletters, photos, relics from abandoned and demolished buildings, and other historical information. The museum is open to the public.

I worked at Pilgrim, from 1979-1984, most of my family worked there, as cooks, mental health workers, custodians, I was there when patients had lobotomies and electric shock treatments, I remember we had a patient named Ada who came because she found her husband dead on the floor at her house, she went into shock . She would not talk, I counseled her telling her, she had to snap out of it and answer the psychiatrist questions or she would be there indefinitely. She finally took my advice and returned home, and lived a productive life. She used to make me poppy seed cakes.

My friend told me he was driving to his home from work at night time around 11pm and psychiatric center is on his way to home , while he was passing the hospital he saw a woman standing in the side of the road wearing straight jacket . He was very shocked to see that but once he got close to her she was vanished and he looked around but no one was there , he told me he went home and he got so scared that for 6 months he never took that way to his house

My grandfather was patient at Pilgrim State from its opening until his death in 1971. He originally was at Manhattan State from 1926 to transfer to Pilgrim. My family denied his existence all my life. He died “with no known family” according to Pilgrim records - not true since my grandmother had him committed in 1926 plus they had 3 children together, one being my Mom. So Pilgrim knew he had family but I think my grandmother refused to acknowledge him in her later years. She passed in 1985. My mother told me all my life her father was dead, but now I know he was alive until I was already an adult with family of my own. I’ve spent years researching my grandfather & now have a photo, his medical records and even his burial plot number. I’m looking for anyone with more info. I’m planning to visit his plot and place a marker with his name etc. Current hospital had been very open & helpful & even wants to show me where he lies. Any reported activity at this location would be appreciated. He deserves to be put at peace.

I literally had a job interview here but something told me do not go. I am already employed currently and the tolls and gas wouldn’t make a difference in changing jobs.
I asked a friend who lives in Long Island about it and he said it’s haunted! I was not even shocked. Something was telling me do not go but at the same time I felt I was being called or something was pulling me to go.
I’m not going. I’m going to pass. Why would I work somewhere that spirits will never be at peace.
