About Nightmare: Vampires - New York NY
In what is perhaps the most stylistic NIGHTMARE to date, this year’s theme is Fairy Tales. Under the direction of Creator and Co-Director Timothy Haskell, NIGHTMARE: FAIRY TALES stages the original versions of well-known (and some lesser known) fairy tales at their most gruesome and horrific. Over the centuries many of these fables have evolved into sanitized entertainment for children, but they began as racy and violent tales intended to keep children from misbehaving.
Get lost in a dark forest and wander through the woods while becoming the characters and reliving the terrifying experiences extracted from over a dozen twisted stories handed down by The Brothers Grimm, Aesop, Hans Christian Anderson, and more. Try and stay on the path as you go from cottage to cottage - each housing a familiar tale told in the way they were intended - to scare the wits out of you! Each cottage gets more and more intense until you reach the climactic conclusion. Then you have to find your way home. Be careful, though, there are hidden cottages to explore.
"The original purpose for virtually all fairy tales was to scare children straight, so they wouldn't do anything dangerous, bad or amoral," says co-director and creator Timothy Haskell. "We are going to teach those same lessons to our audiences! The narratives of the Fairy Tales chosen lend themselves to Nightmare's unique theatricality, while giving opportunities for fantastical scenarios and set pieces."

Fun, but better be in shape

Very enjoyable and some good scares, but one thing that the event holders should warn about are the 'physical challenges' which require you in some cases to climb over or under things. Also, some of the corridors are extremely thin -- which might be their attempt to make you feel claustraphobic, but plus-sized folks might have issues making it through.

Still, worth going to!!!!
Not so great

We were a huge group. Very hot, more fun than scary. Too hyped up I guess. Not scary, but if your are claustrophobic or dont like the dark, could potentially be "scary". Stay on the island and go to Andreas house or N Lindenhurst fire department
Much scarier and more for your money and time. This place didnt have enough surprises. Lots of empty rooms not enough actors.. or the actors didnt scare you at all. just popped in and out once in a while.
Just wanted to get out cause it was uncomfortable (hot and dark)
But not scary, and Im not that hard to scare. Most of the group (of 18) agreed.
Sorry folks.. better luck next time..
waste of money

is all i keep asking myself. went to blood manor afterwards and paid 10 bucks to go in again and you see more crazy shit at blood manor two times than i probly would 50 times at nightmare. I will never go back, lost all faith in this place. it's new york, how can you find such terrible actors in a place of so much theater and talent?
Best to this day

pre-paid $30 to stand in a long line (got there 7:30, went in at 8:30, stood in the rain for about half of it, then walked up 2 flights of stairs to get in). they had terrible cheap vodka and no juice for $6 and no snacks despite having a menu for it. there was an extremely boring beginning presentation. about 5-7 small rooms and somewhat scary dark balloon-type walkway that you had to squeeze through. one room had a guy who masturbated to death in front of a stripper (hand in pants), another blood-bath room with a steroid dependent guy who didn't do anything (bad), an insect room with a guy who came off the wall (good), and another room had a girl who cut off her arm and put her arm through another guy (good, not scary though). the actors were overall decent and the people manning the lines were nice, but it was really hot and most of them smelled like armpit. the place itself took about 10-15 minutes to walk through.

the good part was the buy one, get one free margarita next door at gonzales that was printed at the bottom of the haunted house ticket. they had decent drinks and great table guacamole that is prepared in front of you.
Sooooo disappointed

I went to Nightmares a few years back and it was incredible. This year it was pathetic.
Not Quite As Good As Last Year -- But Still Fun
Reviewed Date: 10/18/2008 3 Stars3 Stars3 Stars
This year it was smart that the Nightmare folks offered guests a choice -- whether you wanted to take the more physically challenging path or a regular one. Last year's maze might have put off some attendees who weren't prepared for climbing up and over things.

Also a nice touch was how parts of your group could get separated. We lost one friend for a few minutes through a 'secret passage' and kept hearing her scream until she stumbled back to us.

Unfortunately, I think the scares were a little less frequent this year. Instead there was an attempt to make the experience more 'unsettling' or 'creepy' -- the actors in some instances had too much dialogue -- the more they spoke, the more 'human' they became.

The first haunt was the better of the two. The second -- based on movie monsters, was very dissapointing. In one room (which I believe was based on 'Saw'), the actor simply sat there, fairly expressionless as we passed by him. We assumed he was perhaps a distraction for the real scare, but no -- nothing happened.

Better luck next year guys.
